Reflections from the Zambezi

In February 2020, I was privileged to stay at Freshview Homes Lodge in Siavonga for a workshop. Freshview Homes is nestled on Lake Kariba with great views of the lake especially during sunrise and sunset times. Here are some of the photos I took whilst there and of surrounding areas. In July 2021, I travelled to Livingstone for a funeral for a late close relative. After the burial I needed to cool off, think and re-energise. Watching the sun set on the Zambezi river from the terraces of the Royal Livingstone was the venue of choice. Below are some photos taken during the time I was there. In the first week of January 2020, a few months before the Covid-19 pandemic struck worldwide, I was priviliged to travel to Cape Town for a Strategic Planning meting of the e/Merge Africa. I am the country representative of e/Merge Africa. I travelled to Cape Town from Lusaka using South African Airways. My outward journey to Cape Town was on 4th January with the return journey being on 11th January. One of the places that I had on my must see places in London was the Metropolitan Tabernacle.  Metropolitan Tabernacle is an Independent Reformed Baptist Church where Charles Haddon Spurgeon was the church minister or pastor for 38 years.  Spurgeon is regarded as one of the greatest preachers of the nineteenth century. He was known as the "Prince of Preachers".    The current minister of the church is Dr. Peter Masters. He has been the minister of the church since 1970. He has faithfully preached the word and ministered to his flock for over 50 years. He has also authored many books and booklets as well as trained men from the UK and internationally as preachers and church ministers through the School of Theology and London Reformed Baptist Seminary. He started the Evangelical Times, a monthly periodical focusing on news of for Evangelical churches in the UK. Letter to my Children Kenneth Kaunda Veritas Trust 1977 139 pages One of the things that I and my fellow boarders at Kafue Secondary School looked forward to during our meals in the dining hall was receiving letters especially those from our parents and guardians. These letters were important in maintaining connection with our families as we got news of what was happening in our families as well as get advice on how to conduct ourselves at school.  The book 'Letter to my children' by Kenneth Kaunda, the first Republican President of Zambia was written to his children as a kind of public apology for neglecting his children so badly by putting his political career before his family. This book is dedicated to his children and the youth of Zambia. Some key highlights of this book are: Faith and values. Here Dr. Kaunda discusses issues of power. In this blog, I give an abridged version of the biographical sketches of the the first three pastors of Lusaka Baptist Church from 1959 to 1976.  Derek Harris (1959 - 1961) Derek Harris was the first pastor of Lusaka Baptist Church from 1959 - 1961. He played a pioneering role in establishing the church. He was passionate in evangelistic work. Derek Harris was born on 6 April 1927 and was educated and worked in London. Harris was converted during his teens through the Youth Ministry of the Brethren Assembly. He was called to be the first pastor of Lusaka Baptist Church on 1st January 1959. Claude and Charles Kidwell (brothers) were pioneers in establishing the Church and were key in calling Harris to Lusaka Baptist Church. Though the congregation was small initially, it grew in strength and numbers leading to the construction of a church building.
