Reflections from the Zambezi

Yarra river The date is 18 September 2023. It is almost dawn. I make my way from my hotel to Yarra river to view the sunrise. On my way to the river I notice a number of commuters with cups of coffee in their hands making their way to the Southern Cross training station. After walking for about 15 minutes, I find the Yarra river and take in different views of the river as the sun rises. The side walk along the river is well paved making it easy to walk along the river.  Later I make my way to my hotel where I take a shower and head to the restaurant for a filling breakfast. Towards midday, John, my work colleague and I step outside to meet my niece Brenda and her husband Khumbulani. In July 2021, I travelled to Livingstone for a funeral for a late close relative. After the burial I needed to cool off, think and re-energise. Watching the sun set on the Zambezi river from the terraces of the Royal Livingstone was the venue of choice. Below are some photos taken during the time I was there. In the first week of January 2020, a few months before the Covid-19 pandemic struck worldwide, I was priviliged to travel to Cape Town for a Strategic Planning meting of the e/Merge Africa. I am the country representative of e/Merge Africa. I travelled to Cape Town from Lusaka using South African Airways. My outward journey to Cape Town was on 4th January with the return journey being on 11th January. One of the places that I had on my must see places in London was the Metropolitan Tabernacle.  Metropolitan Tabernacle is an Independent Reformed Baptist Church where Charles Haddon Spurgeon was the church minister or pastor for 38 years.  Spurgeon is regarded as one of the greatest preachers of the nineteenth century. He was known as the "Prince of Preachers".    The current minister of the church is Dr. Peter Masters. He has been the minister of the church since 1970. He has faithfully preached the word and ministered to his flock for over 50 years. He has also authored many books and booklets as well as trained men from the UK and internationally as preachers and church ministers through the School of Theology and London Reformed Baptist Seminary. He started the Evangelical Times, a monthly periodical focusing on news of for Evangelical churches in the UK. Previously I wrote about my first to London here. In this blog I write about my next visit that I did after a few days. I travelled to London from Chatham in Kent using a train. The trip took about an hour. My next visit in England after Kent was St. Neots in Cambridgeshire. However, before getting there I had a long stopover in London in order to visit some places of interest. My first stop was Metropolitan Tabernacle. To get there I used an underground train from St. Pancras International Station. St. Pancras station is very busy linking London to many cities in the UK as well to the rest of Europe. It has a lot of shops and café’s. I had some good old English breakfast in one of the café’s. The breakfast was quite filling and give me energy to do my rounds in London. After breakfast, I left my luggage to be stored at the baggage section at the station.  I then set out to board the train to Elephant and Castle where the Metropolitan Tabernacle is located. River Thames During my visit of the UK in September 2019, one of the cities that I visited was London. It was more of a transitory route on my onward travel to Chatham and later to St. Neots. After leaving Tetbury, I travelled by bus to London for 1 hour a journey of 100 miles (160 km). As we approached London, I could sense I was in London without being told. The magnificent buildings I started seeing gave the city away. I alighted the bus from Victoria Station in the heart of London. At the station, I bought some food and then looked for a place to sit so that I could do some work on my laptop. I found a suitable place at Starbucks where I ordered some coffee and worked away. After working for more than a hour, I decided to become a solo tourist. I went to the baggage section at the Victoria Station and left my bag for storage at a fee. In September 2019, I took some time to visit old friends and relatives in the UK. This was after attending the Pan Commonwealth Forum Conference in Edinburgh Scotland. My first stop as I wrote previously was Camborne in South East England, which I have written about here. My next stop was Tetbury in Gloucestershire, the home of Oliver and Pauline Singogo. To get there, I travelled with Oliver from Camborne where we had gone to visit Mr & Mrs Eathorne. We left Camborne on 15 th September around 14 00 after attending a church service at Centenary Wesleyan Methodist Church, where Ron and Carol Eathorne worship and serve. Before heading out to Tetbury, Oliver took me to the closest beach called Gyllngvase Beach This is something that I appreciated so much for I love seeing water and appreciating God’s creation in how he has made the various water bodies such as rivers, lakes, seas, waterfalls, oceans and so on. Hotel in Camborne Before traveling to the UK to attend the Pan-Commonwealth Forum in Edinburgh from 9th to 13th September, 2019, I planned my itinerary to include a visit of friends and relatives in the UK after the Forum. This visit took me to the following towns: Birmingham, Camborne in Cornwall, Tetbury, Kent, St. Neots and London. In this blog I focus on my trip from Edinburgh to Camborne via Birmingham.   I left Edinburgh at 22 30 on the evening of 13th September using a coach (in the photo above). Of the options available to me such as using a train or plane, the bus option was one that I could afford. I was supposed to leave with the 22 00 coach but because of not checking the instructions on the monitors well I missed the bus. After consulting the bus station staff, I was told that if I got the 22 30 coach, I could still manage to get a connecting bus from Glasgow.
