“Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you?” This was one of the many biblical texts that Reverend Joshua Kekana liked to preach from. Rev. Kekana was one of the elders at Lusaka Baptists Church in the 80s. I have never heard anyone else preach more on the subject of revival that he did.
You could really get a sense of one who longed for God to revive his Church as he had done in times gone by. There was this urgency and passion when he preached on Revival and on other subjects. Rev. Kekana was the oldest elder at the time and a widower. His wisdom and insight into a number of issues was evident. He was very disposed to young people whom he loved to associate with and encourage in the things of God.

Rev. Kekana was a godly man who loved and knew his God. He loved to preach the word and point men to God. He loved the presence of God and it is no wonder he longed for revival something he often would return to preach about.
His sermons were engaging and you would be carried along with him as he preached from the word. It’s as if he was holding you by his hand and saying: “Come along with me my friend as we explore into the treasures of God’s word”. He preached with an engaging and convincing voice. He preached powerfully and simply. One could easily follow his sermons as he aimed to make his preaching clear to all regardless of their age and spiritual growth.

There are a number of hymns that Rev. Kekana. Hymns loved such as:
“Search me, O God, and know my heart today,
Try me, O Saviour, know my thoughts I pray;
See if there be some wicked way in me;
Cleanse me from every sin, and set me.
Oh Holy Ghost, revival comes from Thee;
Send a revival, start the work in me;
Thy Word declares Thou wilt supply our need;
For blessings now, O Lord, I humbly plead.
James Edwin Orr
“We praise Thee, O God!
For the Son of Thy love,
For Jesus Who died,
And is now gone above.
Hallelujah! Thine the glory,
Hallelujah! Amen.
Hallelujah! Thine the glory,
Revive us again.
Revive us again;
Fill each heart with Thy love;
May each should be rekindled
With fire from above.
Mark Hayes, John J. Husband & William P. Mackay
Each time I sing these hymns I am reminded of our dear elder Reverend Joshua Kekana. We think God for his time and gifts among his people at Lusaka Baptist Church and beyond. May God bless the memory of his servant.
